Confusion in Anambra Market Over Barrow Levy

Traders of Ogbaru Main Market,  a suburb of Onitsha, Anambra State came to the market Monday morning  to be confronted by an array of hoodlums who claimed they were  enforcing the payment of wheel barrow levy.

This brought Sharon disagreement and misunderstanding between the traders and the hoodlums.

Some of the traders who spoke with us said that over 200 hoodlums said to have been sent by the Chairman of Ogbaru Local Government Area, Hon. Arinze Awogu, stormed the market early morning  to forcefully collect the levy.

Angered by the continuous collection of suspended and unauthorized revenue, the Ogbaru Local Government Area has swooped on illegal revenue collectors at different locations in the Local Government, seized their  different fake receipts and tickets.

The operation which took place on Monday and  lasted for about 7 hours saw the Taskforce of the Local Government moving  round strategic areas the fake revenue collectors operated such as the Harbour Industrial Layout, Atani Road by Obodoukwu Road junction, Obodoukwu Road by Ede Road and Obodoukwu Road by Express among others.

Anakwe, Ex-OMMATU Leader Asks Obiano to Intervene Over Market Crisis

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State  has been urged to intervene without further delay to stop those who want to plunge the markets in the State into an unnecessary crisis.

Former President-General of Onitsha Markets Amalgamated Traders Association (OMATA), Chief Pius Ozo Anakwe, who made the call in an interview with newsmen in Onitsha, the Anambra State commercial hub,  spoke against the back drop of forceful entry into  the offices of  Amalgamated  Markets  Traders Association of Anambra Traders (AMATAS) Monday by the Interim Committee set up by the State Government.

Anakwe said when he heard of the forceful ejection of Board of Trustees (BoT) of AMATAS and entry into their  corporate office at Modebe Avenue, Onitsha by the members of the resurrected ASMATA, he wondered if the order came from a Court of competent jurisdiction or where did it come from?

Anambra Market Splashes Over N100m to Empower Members ...Buys 1000 Plots for Traders'Estates

 Building Material Market, Ogidi, a suburb of Onitsha, the Anambra State commercial nerve centre has splashed over one hundred million naira on over 500 of its members.

The president of the market, Chief Jude Nwankwo, who stated this in an interview said the amount which has since been  disbursed to the beneficiaries was to rehabilitate some of its members whose businesses have nose-dived.

He also the cash gift to some of the members of the flourishing Market was to empower its members who are having challenges in their businesses.

Anambra Market Crisis: "You must conduct election" - Board of Trustees Insists

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of Amalgamated Markets Traders of Anambra State (AMATAS), has insisted that they will soon conduct the election into the executive of the body to fill the vacuum created by the exit of their immediate leader, Chief Okwudili Ezenwankwo.

The acting chaiman of BoT, AMATAS, Chief Emmanuel Udegbunam, told newsmen  in their office at Modebe Avenue, Onitsha that they have been consulting with the relevant stakeholders of the body and after that consultation they will hold their election.

He said the tenure of Ezenwankwo led executive will  expire by the of this June but because Chief Nwankwo wanted to formally hand over to a new executive they fixed June 5, 2019 for the election which was postponed indefinitely on the request of Governor Willie Obiano.

Biafra Agitation: Police Detains Widow, Vendor in Onitsha

The Police in Anambra State is yet to release  an Onitsha newspaper vendor and  widow, Mrs Ngozi Odunze, six days she was arrested. A Joint Task Force of security operatives in the State comprising of soldiers and Police arrested the vendor at Obodo-Ukwu Road by Owerri Road, where she was selling newspapers during their clamp down on pro -Biafran activists in the area.
Odunze who was arrested along with the  people the Task Force claimed were either members of the  Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB)  Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).
