Anambra Market Crisis: "You must conduct election" - Board of Trustees Insists

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of Amalgamated Markets Traders of Anambra State (AMATAS), has insisted that they will soon conduct the election into the executive of the body to fill the vacuum created by the exit of their immediate leader, Chief Okwudili Ezenwankwo.

The acting chaiman of BoT, AMATAS, Chief Emmanuel Udegbunam, told newsmen  in their office at Modebe Avenue, Onitsha that they have been consulting with the relevant stakeholders of the body and after that consultation they will hold their election.

He said the tenure of Ezenwankwo led executive will  expire by the of this June but because Chief Nwankwo wanted to formally hand over to a new executive they fixed June 5, 2019 for the election which was postponed indefinitely on the request of Governor Willie Obiano.

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambta State has been urged to review his stand  to impose  Caretaker Committee on the Amalgamated Market Traders of Anambra State (AMATAS).

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of AMATAS after a crucial meeting during the week appealed to Governor Obiano to allow the traders to elect their leaders through democratic process to avoid any friction within markets in the State.

The umbrella market organisation had planned to conduct election on June 5, 2019 with all the preparations completed but on June 4, 2019, the Governor called the outcome president  Chief Okwudili Ezenwankwo to call off the election, hinting of his plan to set up Caretaker Committee to oversee the markets in the State.
