Confusion in Anambra Market Over Barrow Levy

Traders of Ogbaru Main Market,  a suburb of Onitsha, Anambra State came to the market Monday morning  to be confronted by an array of hoodlums who claimed they were  enforcing the payment of wheel barrow levy.

This brought Sharon disagreement and misunderstanding between the traders and the hoodlums.

Some of the traders who spoke with us said that over 200 hoodlums said to have been sent by the Chairman of Ogbaru Local Government Area, Hon. Arinze Awogu, stormed the market early morning  to forcefully collect the levy.

The barrow pushers with the backing of traders  in the market however, resisted the payment of the levy on the ground that it was illegal since the Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, has since waived off the levy for the barrow pushers.

The Chairman of the market, Chief Nwawuzie who spoke with this correspondent on on phone  confirmed the position of the barrow pushers, insisting that the   levy was illegal.

He lamented the frequent harassment of traders of Ogbaru Main Market by the Hon. Awogu and called on the Governor to intervene by calling the chairman to order.
He said this has become necessary to avoid  unnecessary tension which may result breakdown of law and order in the market.
