ASABA – Afure Sakpra, the Commissioner for Special Duties, Governor’s Office, Delta State, has disclosed that the state spends over N23 million monthly to care for widows.
He revealed this on Thursday during a ministerial press briefing, maintaining that the state government was looking to extend the number of widows’ slot under Widow Welfare Scheme.
According to him, the scheme has been effective, as over 5,000 despondent widows from each ward in the state benefitted from the monthly stipends.
“These widows are engaged into the state insurance scheme, where you would be entitled to free health services. No matter the degree or severity of the illness that may confront them, they are to get free health care,” he revealed.
“There are some special wards that have more people and again this particular problem has given us so much accolades as a result of the free healthcare benefit attached to it,” he said.
He also stated that implementations are also been made by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to open more doors and bring in more widows into the scheme.
Speaking on the community affected by the rainstorm, where properties were destroyed, he said that “the Emevor rainstorm, SEMA and NEMA are already on it as they are working out modalities to ensure that those buildings that were affected are put in order.
“The destruction we have in that place is really devastating as it is not something the state government can capture alone,” assuring that the area was not abandoned as the government was looking critically at it to ensure the community got back to its feet.
