The Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) has been asked to beam its search light on the finances and expenditure of South East and South South Governors.
The Human Right, Liberty Access and Peace Defenders Foundation (HURIDE), in s strongly worded statement during the weekend after their quarterly meeting held in Enugu which they used to asses the performances and implementation of2018/ 2019 budgets of each of the State in the zones, lamented the abysmal performance of the Governors in the face of huge infrastructural decay in their respective states.
In the statement signed by Dede Uzor A Uzor, the group also decried the degree of frittering of the Commonwealth of the people on frivolities, instead of channelling the money to areas which would be beneficial to the people.
HURIDE lamented the alleged provision of N1.35 billion by the Anambra State Government for Christmas decorations, while a paltry sum of N181m was allocated to reconstruction of bad roads.
The rights body said if this was true, then it showed the insensitivity and callousness of Governor Willie Obiano's administration, wondering the benefit of decorations during Christmas and New year festivities to the economy and welfare of the citizens, that such a whopping sum was allegedly allocated to it.
They said the sane thing to do was to channel the entire money to rehabilitation of damaged roads in various parts of the State, particularly in Onitsha, the commercial nerve centre which virtually all the roads are in deplorable State.
They said it was pathetic because throughout the year the Anambra people have been crying for road rehabilitation but Government allocated a patry sum of N181m.
"No wonder all the roads in Onitsha still remained unattended to inspite of promises by the Governor and his aides to rehabilitate them before Christmas" they said.
In Enugu Stste, the group said, Governor Ugwuanyi's "nrashi" policy has been used to divert money to individual pockets and frivolous things that have no direct bearing to the welfare of the people of the State.
"Hence, all the major infrastructure especially roads in Enugu metropolis, Nsukka and the rural communities are begging for attention" said HURIDE.
"The same wastages and plundering of people's Commonwealth are going in other states of Imo and Abia and other South South States.
Peharps Ebonyi State is the only State in the South East that is trying to put on ground visible infrastructure"the group said.
Continuing they said " we are therefore calling on EFCC operatives to beam their search light on the finances of South East States and South South States to restraint the excesses of the Governors in using their funds for frivolous things like Christmas decorations when roads, education, health sector are suffering" Dede Uzor fumed
