The Inspector General of Police (IG), Ibrahim Idris, has been urged to remove one of his Commanders in charge of IG Special Squad in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Mr. Ben Igwe, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), for allegedly compromising his official position by meddling into Oba land dispute.
In a joint press conference during the weekend by the Anambra Democratic Vanguard (ADV), Oba Women Development Front (OWDF) and Oba Land Dispute Resolution Groups (OLDR), they demanded to know whether the membership of IG Special Squad gave a Police officer the powers to come all the way from Porthacourt, Rivers State to intimidate and arrest people in Anambra State over land dispute.
According to the spokesman of the groups, Chief Kenechukwu Ojukwu, one Chuba Oranusi, the President-General of Ogwugwu village and Ifeanyi Nkemdilim, the President-General of Isu village both in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State have been using Igwe to harass, intimidate and arrest the Aboji Akanano indigenes over land dispute between them.
He said this happened sometime ago in 2017 and this year when there was a land dispute at Ugbo, the same Igwe and his boys came all the way from Porthacourt to arrest their people after he had been allegedly offered plots of land by Isu and Ogwugwu leaders which sells about N2m per a plot.
The group said on two occasions, their President-General, Nze Dozie Nweke, he was made to pay N550,000. He paid N350, 000 in the first instance, and N200,000 the second time.
They also alleged that it was during that arrest that one of their boys Obiabuchukwu Nweke, died.
"Now they are using Igwe and his boys again to intimidate our people by inviting individuals to come to Porthacourt. The job of IG Special Squad is not to dabble into land disputes but to handle criminal matters especially armed robbery and kidnapping but this man is being used for land dispute. We call on IG and the Police Service Commission (PSC) to sanction Ben Igwe and redeploy him immediately to Police College" the groups said.
The group alleged that each time they arrested their people, they were forced to cough out huge sums of money to bail them out.
They said Igwe had allegedly vowed to come and embark on mass arrest of Aboji Akanano boys again and warned that the youths have equally vowed to resist what they termed illegal arrest, saying that the arrest of their President-General, Nze Dozie Nweke, should be the last.
The group cautioned that Igwe should henceforth desist in meddling in the family land dispute in Oba.
When Igwe was called on his mobile handset to state his own side of the matter, it was ringing but he did not pick.
