A source at Ogbe-Ogonogo market in Oshimili South Local Government of Delta State yesterday revealed that some fraudsters evacuating rubbish from gutters were allegedly extorting the sum of three thousand #3,000 from each traders at the market for evacuating the rubbish in the market gutters, on the grounds that they were directed to act in such manner, by the local government Chairman, Hon. Chike Osadebe.
According to the source, last week, they came and extorted the sum of seven thousand #7,000 naira from each of the traders.
Seeing that the fraud was lucrative, and thrive unchallenged, they returned again and demanded for another #3,000, which will amount to a total of #10,000 in less than two weeks. On this grounds, one of the affected traders refused to part with the money, even as other persons have obediently paid, which lead to the seizure of the goods of the disobedient trader.
When this reporter was notified, he put a call to the local government Chairman, Hon. Chike Osadebe, Osadebe was displeased with the actions of the fraudsters/workers. According to Osadebe: I asked them to clean up the place, and I have paid them for the job, why would they indulge in extorting the traders, i did not ask them to collect any money. Please am going to call them now, the council Chairman averred.
A source in the know revealed that the fraudsters realised not less than one million naira from gullible traders at the market.
However, one the traders whose goods were seized yesterday, called this reporter today to reveal that his goods and that of the other affected persons have been returned. Even as he expressed shock that he was so convinced when he earlier paid the seven thousand naira, not until this reporter intervened, following their return the second time for another round of extortion.
