Carnage: FRSC, Army, Police, Others to Decongest Upper Iweka, Arrest Criminals as HURIJE Lauds Obiano, Oyeyemi

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), in collaboration with the Anambra State Government and relevant transport unions in Anambra State have set machinery in motion to decongest and curb the recurring traffic carnage at  Upper Iweka, especially around  old Nitel park.

The Corp Marshal of  Commission , Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, said after their  meeting with transport unions, the Anambra State Traffic Management Agency (ATMA), it was agreed that there would be no more loading in that area of Upper Iweka especially the accident prone areas and highways.

He said the Commission, ATMA, the Police, Army would  as from April 1, 2019  decongest Upper Iweka, provide security and stop indiscriminate loading   which has caused fatal accidents in the area.

The Corp Marshal said Governor Willie Obiano has directed FRSC to open Control Post close to Old Nitel to direct and clamp down stubborn offenders.

That part of Upper Iweka has become  notorious with accidents that had claimed  many lives.

A fortnight ago , on March 13, 2019, around Toronto hospital and Old Nitel section of Upper Iweka 23 persons were killed when a trailer lost control and rammed into the people and vehicles  loading in that area.

Over 40 people  were said to have sustained different  degrees of injuries.

In 2017, similar accident took place almost at the same place which attracted the Vice-President of the Country, Prof. Osinbajo in which about 68 persons were killed when tanker laden with PMS fell and exploded.

Lauding the proactive decision of the Corp Marshal and Governor Willie Obiano, Human Rights, Liberty Access and Peace Defenders Foundation, (HURIJE), said there were other accidents in that area which were not recorded.

The Chairman of HURIJE , Dede Uzor A. Uzor, commended the Corp Marshal for his aggressive plan to decongest the area, saying that he acted on the memo they wrote to the Governor and other traffic control agencies after their visit to the scene of the accident.

He said the Corp Marshal took it  upon himself, met with the Governor who constituted a team comprising the Army, the Police, ATMA, Ocha Brigade and other relevant agencies to arrest the situation at Upper Iweka.

"We commend this effort by Corp Marshal, his prompt and positive response. He ensured that this committee will commence work on Monday April 1, 2019 to stop indiscriminate loading at Upper Iweka. We also commend the Governor who have accepted to provide necessary incentives for them to succeed in their task".

Dede Uzor continued "we also want to appeal to them to use their good offices to decongest Owerri road, where travellers spent over night with criminals having field day".

Dede Uzor who is also the Publicity Secretary of Campaign for Democracy (CD), urged the Corp Marshal to review the price paid by Nigerians to procure driving license, saying the amount should be made public while those who capitalize on the situation to extort money from innocent citizens should be arrested by its national taskforce on corruption and extortion, Dede Uzor pleaded
